The Houston Public Media Spelling Bee is the nation’s third largest local spelling bee. This year’s bee season involved spellers from 1,060 schools in 42 Texas Counties representing 100,000+ students. The culminating event on March 29 was a marathon competition of 55 elite spellers ranging in age from 8 to 14. See photos from the bee.
2014 HOUSTON PUBLIC MEDIA SPELLING BEE RESULTS
Shobha Dasari, a seventh grader at Pearland Junior High School in Pearland ISD, and Syamantak Payra, an eighth grader at Westbrook Intermediate School in Clear Creek ISD, are the 2014 Houston Public Media Spelling Bee Co-Champions. Both students were co-champions in 2013.
Complete results include: Gabriel Bolanos, Shourav Dasari and Devanshi Udeshi tied for third place.
CO-CHAMPIONS ON THEIR WAY TO SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE
Shobha and Syamantak will represent the Southeast Texas region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 27-29 in Washington, D.C. They will compete with 279 contestant spellers from across the country, aiming for victory and prizes worth more than $30,000.
Both students represented our region in last year's national competition: Syamantak ranked seventh (tie) and Shobha ranked nineteenth (tie).

Beginning August 14, teachers and administrators can enroll schools in the 2014-15 spelling bee.
